The BurnWorld Review:
Little did I realize that the next impression for
driving innovation for DVD/R technology would neither
be in the field of Software or electronics hardware
but instead would come from the field of Chemistry.
Several weeks ago I heard from a gentleman
representing a category of chemicals called thin
films. Because I'd never hear of them, I had no idea
what the guy was talking about. At Burn World we are
about everything DVD/R, including media, software,
hardware and the marriage of production art with
engineering science, it didn't dawn on me that
something chemical could even be meaningful to DVD/R
production .
In a few days I received a package that included
several bottles of chemical solution with
instructions. But before I get into that, let me say
that my expectations for these were as low as one
could expect. No one seemingly in our industry had
that I know of ever written about user applied
chemical thin films, so my view was Show me. As one
who has undertaken all manner of challenges in the
DVD/R world, I've come to appreciate big things such
as a dual format DVD burner, and little SW utilities
like GEAR PRO DVD, in their own way each
contributed equally to the success of my own
production work, and amazed me in the importance of
all this cool stuff just coming together.
What became clear from reading the literature and
doing some simple things with a test disc which the
company provided ,was that this is serious stuff,. I
never fully attributed media performance to disc
surface conditions, I vaguely knew that a badly
scratched disc was a dead disc and headed into my
coaster collection which is quite large by now.
Seemingly, no one in the industry views media the way
these guys do, they look at media performance from the
top down. In this way, they believe you as a producer
dictate the performance of the media.
Their focus is on Surface conditions. Their position
is that by applying these chemicals, you create for
yourself and your eventual user, a disc which will be
more likely to work without problems, than if you did
not take the time to use them. After doing my own
tests, I can say I agree 100%.
Let me share with you what I did to run this stuff
through it's paces and comparing that with my direct
experience with DVD/R media. But before I do anything
I should tell you the products names; they are from an
innovative company called CD // DVD PLAYRIGHT, the
products are called Quick Shield ND and Quick
Shield.
In case your wondering the ND stands for NEW DISC and
it is a first layer optical laminate. While Quick
Shield adds several other features over the laminate,
including a cleaner, an anti static agent and slippery
surface technology that keeps the disc from looking
horrible after being handled.
The BurnWorld Tests:
Here are a few tests I tried with the products.
Test 1- I have a DVD that wouldn't track properly
due to excessive handling. After a quick cleaning, the problem was
resolved. This was as expected, I thought if it did not pass this
test they why bother with the rest. But rest assured this was only
the beginning.
Test 2- I have a DVD that has a lot of minor scratches.
The disc played well except for a few scenes where my DVD player
would just skip over it. I followed the instructions and applied
the QuickShield spray and wiped it down with the cloth. A few minutes
later I was done. I put the DVD into my player and went into the
bad scenes, it played without any hesitation. Not bad, it fixes
DVD's, but what about CD-ROM's?
Test 3- I decided to bust out some old CD-ROM
games that I have had for awhile collecting dust. I came across
Myst (remember that brain buster?) it was in pretty bad shape. So
bad that I could not even view the disc on my machine, I actually
thought it was because of Windows XP. So I treated the disc in the
same way as Test 2, I repaired the scratches and removed the dust
and fingerprints with a coating of the CD/DVD QuickShield spray.
I put the CD-ROM into the drive and, guess what, AutoPlay detected
it ( it wasn't a Winblows XP issue at all, just kidding about the
name) . In minutes I was having flashbacks to some frustrating times
playing Myst.
Test 4- For the final test I chose my all time
favorite CD. This one is rare and was hard to find. The problem
on this is something I'm sure we can all relate to, while getting
out of my car the CD slipped from my hand onto the concrete face
up, without thinking I picked it up and the CD slid along the rough
pavement as I failed to get a good hold on it. The damage was done,
and as a result the last two tracks never played right. They skipped
from start to finish. Honestly I didn't think the CD QuickShield
products could fix it, but it couldn't hurt to try. I sprayed a
coating of CD/DVD Quick Shield and let it set for a good 10 minutes
before buffing it out, then I coated it with a second treatment
and let that sit for 10 minutes. Afterwards I put the CD into my
player and hit the play button. I was shocked to hear that the last
two tracks that were once always skipping were actually playing
CORRECTLY. I couldn't believe the QuickShield repaired it! Now I
can stop the search for a replacement disc.
Noteworthy- I also treated brand some new generic,
cheepy DVD+R and DVD-R media with the QuickShield ND solution before
writing to it. Now I had been burning an averaging of at least 3
coasters our of 10 while trying to write to this cheap media, and
it was not due to the software. After applying the QuickShield ND
solution I did not, yes I did not have one coaster at all, yes at
all. I definitely recommend to use the QuickShield ND solution to
brand new media, whether its DVD-R, DVD+R, CDR, whatever, to improve
the quality of the writing.
The Overview:
As I mentioned earlier it's pretty hard to convince me of a products
worth, but I saw the results with my own eyes. Even better I was
the one who did it. From my calculations it would have cost me around
$125 to replace the 2 DVD's, the CD-ROM, and the CD. With a retail
price of $34.95 the CD/DVD QuickShield Value Pack is a bargain.
I can now rest at night knowing that if one of the kids gets a hold
of one of my discs and treats it like a Frisbee ( hey it's payback
for rolling my dad's LP's down the driveway) that it can be repaired
with a simple solution.
